It's been officially confirmed -- Moonlight has been canceled.
Let the hysterics begin.
Look, I know what one likes or doesn't like is purely subjective, but it makes me snicker when I read some of the comments on Kristin's announcement saying how Moonlight is the best-written show they've ever seen, better than Angel, etc. Um...yeah, not so much.
I watched the show and enjoyed it for the most part, but I'm not particularly heartbroken about its cancellation.
I will, however, miss seeing Alex O'Loughlin on a weekly basis.
Mondays used to be so sparse when it came to watching TV, especially after Prison Break became so ludicrous that I abandoned it. (Speaking of, the fact that they're bringing the supposedly-beheaded Sara back next season is kind of insulting to even semi-intelligent TV viewers everywhere.)
After a craptastic week and a weekend that saw lots of sleeping and lots of watching movies that make me somber (Atonement, Juno, Speak, In the Land of Women) and/or that are just plain depressing with no redemptive quality that I can think of, except for the Tracy/Chris storyline that was far, far too short (Into the Wild), I'm definitely looking forward to the return of the last of the shows affected by the writer's strike.
Except the schedule's been majorly shifted around.
Tomorrow alone brings brand-spanking-new episodes of Gossip Girl, Bones, and House, all three of which I watch, in addition to Dancing With the Stars (seriously, what is up with me and reality TV this season?) and Medium.
Tuesdays are less crowded now that House and Bones have jumped to Mondays -- other than American Idol, I watch NCIS and Women's Murder Club (which returns April 29).
Ditto with Wednesdays: just one non-Idol show in Criminal Minds.
Thursdays are jam-packed now that both Grey's and Lost have returned, because in addition to both of those, I still watch The Office, Scrubs, CSI and Without a Trace. Yeah. That's a lot of TV in one night. Thank God for TiVo (especially since Grey's, The Office and CSI are all on at the same time.)
I'm trying to get into Moonlight, which is on Fridays, but that's the only thing I watch that day after never being able to quite get into Ghost Whisperer and getting tired of Num3ers.
On Sundays is yet another (awesome) Bruckheimer criminal procedural in Cold Case.
I wish everyone would stop comparing Moonlight to the incomparable Angel. Just because both have lead characters who are vampires searching for redemption and, oh yeah, happen to be private investigators doesn't mean that CBS' new drama is the second coming of the critically acclaimed -- and cult favorite -- Joss Whedon series.
For one (obvious) thing, Moonlight lacks, well, Whedon. Its vampire mythology is dotted with Swiss cheese-like discrepancies, and some of its characters -- usually the tertiary ones -- lack dimension and are fairly predictable. The writing is nowhere near the caliber of Angel, sometimes the dialogue can be rather painful, and with the exception of Alex O'Loughlin, there's no stand-out among the cast. And believe me, as a devout Veronica Mars fan, I found that surprising because you'd think Jason Dohring would stand out. To me, he doesn't. Because I am not joking when I say that it's like Logan Echolls was turned into a vampire. The speech pattern, the quirky hand gestures, the facial expressions -- it's all identical to his performance on VM.
I am rather surprised that Moonlight was chosen as the Best New Drama at the People's Choice Awards when it was among such gems as Chuck and Pushing Daisies. PD is the best new drama hands-down. But like other extremely well-written, quirky, charming shows (Wonderfalls, anyone?) I suppose the majority of the population doesn't "get it."
That being said...I enjoy it. I prefer Women's Murder Club, which is on at the same time on ABC, but hey, a combination of the convoluted writer's strike and a TiVo that allows me to record one show while I watch another allows me to partake of both.
Moonlight is definitely not Angel -- but it's entertaining. And it has gotten better since its pilot. Alex O'Loughlin is hot, and a pretty charismatic leading man -- I just wish they'd let him use his real accent. A vampire with an Australian accent? Hot. And the story between Mick and Beth appeals to me as well.
So yeah. I plan to keep watching. On a scale from 1-10, with 10 being shows like Pushing Daisies and LOST, I'd give it a solid 6.
